This week upstairs in NN’s Project Space:
As part of the National Theatre Connections Festival, Royal and Derngate commissioned artist Emma Davies to create a large scale painting within the live arena. The National Theatre Connections Festival is an annual event that enables young people around the country to perform new plays that have been especially commissioned by the National Theatre. They are able to perform these in top theatres around the country. Each theatre hosts a week long event, featuring not just the performances but also workshops from professional performers or directors.
As part of the Royal and Derngates programme, Emma Davies worked with each theatre group to creatively evaluate their experiences of the festival. Through group discussion and practical exercises the workshops explored how to translate language into marks or moods into colours. Each group explored the theme of their chosen play and their personal journeys of the festival. After Emma gathered the evidence, she performed herself; translating their ideas live to the group – using paint and mixed media directly onto a specially made painting ‘stage’ sized 24 ft by 8ft.
The painting will continue to be worked on by Emma Davies who is resident in the Project Space until Sunday.
