Perrine Bailleux

  • Date:
    1–2 March 2017

French artist Perrine Bailleux is coming to Northampton on 1–2 March 2017 to present a performance, workshop and talk as part of NN’s Five Years season exploring aspects of time, travel and time travel.

The performance BE AS IT MAY on 1 March 2017, 7pm at NN Contemporary Art is a performance lecture in song by the Paris-based artist. It analyses an impressionist canvas titled Sisters, by Kazimir Malevich, dated 1910 by the artist but actually executed in the late twenties. Unsatisfied with art history’s account of Malevich’s overall gesture of predating many of his late works, Bailleux analyses Sisters and ventures into its conceptual depths.

The performance is accompanied by a breathing and voice workshop held at the University of Northampton. This workshop is addressed to any person wishing to explore and experiment with the phenomenon of voice emission. It is especially suitable to singers, actors, teachers or anybody who has a frequent and sustained use of one’s voice.

The practice transmitted is entirely based on French singer Marie-Jeanne Rodière’s method as developed in her book Construire sa voix (2009 – Ed. De Relie). It does not aim to define what a “beautiful” voice should be or what it is to “sing well”, but rather to discover how one’s voice works, and what it actually sounds like when one forgets about it. The practice aims at training our bodies and minds towards extreme relaxation, effortlessness, awareness and centering so that the voice becomes the direct emanation of one’s natural breathing and resonates from within the body. One might experiment unprecedented physical and emotional states allowing for a comprehensive and completely new relationship to one’s voice. Perrine will follow the workshop with an artist talk.

Admission to all activity is free.
