From 20–23 April 2016 Jan Uprichard is taking over NN’s Project Space with her Metonymic Time Machine. Jan is using the space to share her recent research and development work supported by Art Council England into creating a time machine allowing you to time travel in your mind using sound, colour/light and smell as triggers.
Works developed by Jan during this research include a video work using clips from long-running hospital drama Casualty. The clips build up to whatever mishap is about to befall the programmes’ characters to play on how we try to sense what might be coming next. Considering premonition or deja-vu as ways that we might time travel to the future in our minds.
Other works include series of abridged books in which Jan noted down every time an author has described sound, colour/light and smell. Jan used this information to make abridged versions of the books using only the text descriptions as well as viles of aromas, audio CD and colour samples.
